Judged "Outstanding" for maths by Ofsted, I began giving private tuition back in 2013 following 25 years as a full-time classroom teacher in multi-cultural Walthamstow. Initially working with primary children and years 7-9, I soon began working with pupils in Years 10 and 11 for Foundation and Higher GCSE maths, who quickly became the mainstay of my clientele, though these included many pupils who started with me in Year 4 or 5 and stayed with me until their GCSEs 7 or 8 years later.

A family man and father of two, I am friendly and trustworthy with a good sense of humour and driven by a passion to help people succeed and grow in confidence, meeting them at their own particular points of need. As a result, I have seen many pupils grow dramatically in confidence and often placed in higher sets. Sometimes this has happened again and again for the same child. Some have received certificates as the most improved pupil in maths in their year and other. Some, having regained enthusiasm and motivation have passed their GCSE following a troubled background, others have passed higher GCSE with a better grade than initially predicted, including several Grade 7’s, 8’s and a 9 in the last couple of years.

Since lockdown, most of my work has been online, including a little work outside the UK but I still make some provision for face-to-face for some local pupils who have particular needs.
I understand and empathize with pupils who struggle with anxiety and related issues and have worked with quite a number of pupils who could not attend school for a season, in some instances, replacing their secondary school teachers for maths in their final year. In such instances, I have been delighted to be able to sufficiently boost their confidence and performance to get them a pass and a better grade than expected.

Additionally, I have good results with more able pupils including coaching for the SATs, 11+ and private school entrance exams alongside the national tests. I have excellent subject knowledge and access to a broad range of trusted resources.
To be honest, some of this is down to the fortunate nature of my position: given that a personal tutor can meet each pupil at their point of need, discern their roadblocks and misconceptions and explain exactly what they need to know, and given that they get an extra hour’s maths every week and homework on top, so long as any pupil does their part, they are bound to achieve much better results.
